Sometimes you Need to Fight⚖️

AWA

I don’t often write about my current work, but I wished to share this positive news (IMO).

After the CEO of Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) unilaterally overturned the decision of their own hearing commissioners, and cancelled the hearing for which Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) and CPAWS Northern Alberta had been given the right to present their scientific findings against the proposed Summit Coal Mine, AWA and CPAWS chose to proceed with a legal fight against the AER.

AWA’s lawyers applied to the Alberta Court of Appeals to request permission to appeal the CEO’s decision. We had our day in court on Thursday, November 6th and were notified on Monday, November 24th that we have been granted permission to appeal. The appeal hearing will likely be scheduled in the next couple of months.

Kennedy Halvorson, conservation specialist at AWA, and the lead for the coal file, had this to say following the decision by the court:

I’m excited that the court recognized the merits of our arguments, and look forward to finally having our day in court.
— Kennedy Halvorson

If Rob Morgan (AER’s CEO) thought AWA would just roll over, he was sadly mistaken; our health, our environment, our water is far too important!

I wish to personally thank the entire legal team [1] who has been representing both AWA and CPAWS NA, and has been incredibly helpful through this entire process. You are doing an amazing job!

Success is not for the lucky. Success belongs to the persistent. Those who dare to stand up every time they fall and continue to move forward with burning eyes and a determined heart!
