The New Civ - What I Like and Dislike…
CIVILIZATION VII
When Sid Meier’s (finally) announced the new edition of Civilization VII I was so excited. I think all fans of Civ were waiting for this release for quite some time.
My first impressions:
- It is not ‘Humankind’ (thankfully)
- The graphics are amazing (although I’m pretty sure I thought that on each new release) - see below
L-R: Civ V; Civ VI; Civ VII - pyramids - difference in graphics
- I don’t mind the age transitions as I get to stay as my starting leader
- I like all the pop-up choices, it really feels like you can tweak the game to your own perspective
- I like the leaders and how they relate to each other (and speaking their own languages)
- I like the new commanders
- I like the civ specific civics
- I wish they allowed pinning still (where were those natural wonders again?)
- Why does the scout not advance? Why can’t he defend?
- Why can’t I cycle through my units?
- The explorer has to visit all sites to investigate a chance to dig - and the sites don’t disappear after, which can be confusing - causing you to visit the same artifact points several times (and there definitely aren’t enough). Also what do you do with the explorers after?
- In my first playthrough I was defeated but it doesn’t show scores or who won 😠or by what means…
- The maps are too small
- I miss being able to choose how many other leaders I’m up against.
- Why do the cities stop growing past three tiles?
- I feel like there are lots of things missing that gives the impression that the launch was rushed…
- Why do all the broadcasted live games only feature male players?
Overall early rating 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐. I hope patches come soon to fix some of these issues.
I think I will continue to play Civ VI until I see some positive changes in VII.
My pre-launch thoughts are here: Once a Civ fan…
