Dinosaur Day 2026🦕

As a child, I remember being excited whenever we found fossils. There were excursions from our home in Terrace, British Columbia to the Nass our family would take to hike and look for fossils. That excitement of finding a fossil really stayed with me over the years and I’ve continued to be fascinated by them. Some other great Canadian sites I’ve visited, as an adult, include Craigleith, Ontario [1] and Joggins Fossil Cliffs in Nova Scotia. [2]

Dinosaur Day occurs annually on June 1st.

The history of Dinosaur Day is uncertain, but the event is thought to have begun in the early 2000s following the massive success of the Jurassic Park film series.

I wasn’t really aware of this special day for dinosaurs, but living in Alberta, there are lots of reminders that you are in ‘dinosaur country’.

Last July I convinced my friend Heather to go with me to Dinosaur Provincial Park, [4] which is located approximately 200 km east of Calgary. I hadn’t been before, so it was definitely one of the places I wanted to see while living here. There is amazing geology there and lots of fossils to see.

I also visited the world-class Royal Tyrell Museum last July.[5] It is truly an amazing place.

I hope you enjoy Dinosaur Day. 🦖Let’s remember to try and protect the species that are still around!
