Voyage to Vulcan
Vulcan, Alberta 🖖🏼
When I moved to Alberta in 2022 I knew there were several places I wanted to see while here, the top two were Vulcan, and the Medalta Potteries. So after almost three years I finally got to see both (within a few weeks of each other). I was joined by my friend from university, Alex Frey, who drove us the hour and a half south from Calgary. The weather all day in Vulcan was spectacular, but we ended up driving through a hail storm on the way back to Calgary.[1]
There are lots of touristy things to do and see in Vulcan, but I would say that if you choose to walk around the town you will see much more (rather than just the highlights). It is a beautiful community and they have all sorts of cultural events throughout the year. Yesterday was Porchfest, and coming up is VulCON2025.
VulCON32
July 25-27, 2025 will mark the 32nd anniversary of the Star Trek Convention.
The town is very charming, and the locals were all quite friendly. It was a wonderful day. We started by visiting the tourist centre (and gift shop) and taking pictures at the Enterprise.[2]
Having done my homework, I knew there were some murals and a bust of Spock…so we headed up Centre Street to check them out. There are significantly more murals than most of the websites let on, and even more if you go off the main road! Star Trek is everywhere from the crosswalk, to the street lights, including a walk of fame (although some of the bronze plaques have been robbed out - the one of Ensign Harry Kim remains).
There are murals everywhere - just keep your eyes open!
Off the main strip you can find other treasures - beautiful homes with well-kept gardens, and other special places.

I would be remiss without mentioning the places we stopped to grab a coffee and to eat. We had a delicious latte at Bean Me Up, and were pleasantly served by Jelena (thank you). They also have a tanning bed, print shop and sell bulk water in the same venue. Definitely check it out! We had lunch at Amy’s - a Chinese buffet, across the highway from the visitor centre/museum. It was also good, and had a nice atmosphere.
Vulcan holds a lot of history and Star Trek fans will surely love it. It makes a great day trip from Calgary. Highly recommended! ⭐💫✨I had a fantastic day and want to thank Alex for sharing it with me!
