Haikus for Nature VI
June 2025
Following are the haikus I have written in June as part of my ‘What’s Your 60?’ challenge. I have committed to complete the following challenges in 2025 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA):
Write 60 nature-based haikus
Submit 60 new observations to iNaturalist
Walk 60 km/month
If you wish to sponsor my efforts you can make a tax-deductible donation to Alberta Wilderness Association.
Fragrant
The scent of lilacs
They perfume the air with joy
Happiness abounds
Black as Night
The crow’s eye watches
Your every move with caution
Night eyes remembers
Prairie Hills
High rolling grasslands
Bely the prairie flatlands
Longing for bison
Photo: Peak of Nose Hill, Calgary - looking west towards the Rockies.
Blue
Morning field of blue
Stretches towards the sunrise
Shares beauty with all
A Spring Colt
Dancing one day old
Already independent
Beauty beholden
As I’m learning more about this art form, I thought I would share a well-known haiku, The Old Pond, by one of the great Japanese masters, Matsuo Bashō. [1]
“An ancient pool,
A frog jumps in -
The sound of water.”
